My Threads story - 3 mistakes, 1 "illegal" thing

Illegal but turned out to be good?

Happy Sunday!

I hope you had a good week!

Todays newsletter will be more personal one, I will be sharing my story behind my Threads account.

It is time that I get to share a bit about myself!

This will be my 2nd newsletter, so don’t expect it to be perfect - Becuase It’s NOT.

Why I started it, how I grew it, what mistakes I did and a “ILLEGAL” thing

This is a looong one, So grab your popcorn and enjoy ;)

I’ll go right into the Meat and Potatoes!

Do you prefer to read it on the Web?

Why I started Posting on Threads

Roughly 1,5 years ago, I started to think “What am I doing with my life?”

I’m just sitting here playing games wasting my valuable time.

For reference, all my free-time was spent on videogames - (Mainly COD and NHL games if your interested)

I wanted a change, I wanted to invest my time into something that would eventually make me money.

So I did as any other person would’ve done; I went to google and typed “Easiest way to make money online 2023”, and the results?

I saw every Make Money Guru telling everybody how easy it is to make money with TikTok and Youtube shorts.

So I actually gave it shot, but it didn’t last for long.

I kept uploading stuff to Youtube and sometimes TikTok for 2-3 months - But I didn’t see the progress I wanted to.

3 months in and I had around 100 subs on Youtube and like 50 followers on TikTok.

I gave up.

I stopped uploading completely - Falling back to my gaming setup and running around with virtual weapons shooting virtual targets (Call of Duty).

But at around christmas-time, it was actually a few days after christmas day - I got the best idea in my life (so far).

The idea was to start posting on Instagram Threads.

I didn’t know much about Threads, only that it was pretty new stuff and the fact it was a text-based social media.

I thought about Threads and was like: “What if Threads is the the next big thing, AND I’m still early to jump on the platform”

This thought led me to taking action.

And on the 1st of January this year, I created my Threads account - SuccessLab101

One of my best decisions in my life.

So, now you know.

11 months later and I’m currently writing a newsletter for my audience.

crazy to think about…

How I grew my account at the start

Buckle up, because this might surprise you…

From the start, my first idea was to be a motivational account.

Lifestyle, motivation, fitness, business and that type of stuff, I was going WIDE.

But I had NO idea what to post.

I remember I was scrolling through posts for like 30 minutes trying to figure what Threads was.

I was clicking on profiles, looking at comments, following accounts that I liked - Just trying to figure out how Threads worked.

Eventually, I started to post random stuff - Motivational quotes, pictures and even memes.

Unfortunately, nothing really worked for me, I got a like or two but nothing worthy.

But then, I discovered something.

A method that is considered ILLEGAL in todays Threads community.

I’m of course talking about copying other people’s posts.

I know I know, it’s awful when people do that.

This might come as a surprise to you, but copying other people’s posts was literally my whole content strategy for my first 2-3 months.

I was ONLY posting copied content.

In those 2-3 months, I remember going from 0 followers to like 2000 followers.

I’m not proud of this, but I was not alone taking advantage of this method at the time.

It was SUPER common to see copied posts EVERYWHERE.

Actually, I don’t really regret copying all those posts, even if it was a scumbag move. (I will explain why later)

Amd that’s the story on how I grew my account in the beginning.

Did it surprise you?

From this point on beyond I actually began to create my own content.

I had the snowball rolling and it wasn’t especially hard to grow if I posted quality content.

My Mistakes looking back at it - And how you avoid them

I have made many mistakes looking back at my journey.

I will talk about 3 of them:

  • Too broad niche

  • Not retaining followers

  • Only wanting to go viral

Mistake #1: Going to wide, too broad niche

When I created my account 11 months ago, my idea was to be a “Lifestyle motivation” account - That would be my niche.

But it was actually a mistake to choose a niche that is so broad and oversaturated.

Sure, my potential audience was bigger and easier to get a lot of followers

But it was still difficult.

This niche is packed with huge accounts already dominating the space.

For example: I was competing against accounts with 100k+ followers.

It was impossible to compete with those guys, and getting consistent engagement on my posts was a very difficult task.

It would take YEARS for me to catch up to those big accounts.

Another disadvantage of choosing a broad niche, is the fact that it’s hard to create any real connections or relations to your followers.

Because your content will be so BROAD.

My content was too general, too many people could relate to it. People relating to your content is usually a good thing, but not when TOO many people can relate to it. (this is IMO)

Think of it in this way:

The more people that can relate your posts, the harder it is to connect with people on a deeper level.

The fewer people that can relate to your post, the easier it is to connect with them on a deeper level.

Note: This was only IMO.

In my case, no one really got attached to my content and I didn’t create any real connection through my posts, since they were so bland and general.

It might have generated me followers and likes, but it didn’t generate me any real connections.

Connections > Followers

My advice to you:

If you feel like your niche is too wide, slim it down.

Instead of “Lifestyle tips” change it too “Fitness for young men” for example.

More specified and less competition.

This is actually what I did, I went from “Lifestyle tips” to “Threads Growth”

Mistake #2: Not retaining my followers

My next mistake was not retaining my followers in some way.

Common ways to retain followers:

  • Creating a private group (discord, facebook, skool)

  • Starting a Newsletter (like I’m doing)

I really regret not doing something about this sooner.

This is the reason I’m sitting here and writing this newsletter, to keep my followers engaged with me and my content.

I’ve come across 10,000+ people on my Threads journey, but only 2-3% of my followers engage with me daily.

What does this mean? Followers come and go.

People that followed me 2+ months ago, might not even use Threads anymore.

That’s actually the case for most of my followers.

But what if I had launched my newsletter 1 month into my Threads Journey, when I had like 300 followers?

Let’s say 15% of my followers would join my newsletter, 15% of 10,000 is 1,500.

1,500 people in my EMAIL LIST that I OWN, that’s a real ASSET which I could further monetize my newsletter.

My advice to you:

Decide if you want to make a private group or newsletter.

And just start inviting people to join it. Everyday.

You will thank yourself in the future, trust me.

The newsletter or group doesn’t have to be perfect, the important part is that you begin collecting emails or make people join your group.

Treat it as an asset which you OWN, you don’t your own Threads account.

Meta can anytime ban you from Threads, without warning.

Mistake #3: Only seeking to go viral

In the beginning, my focus was all about going viral - trying to get that big rush of likes, comments, and new followers.

Sure, it was fun and it gave me a lot of dopamine.

But here’s what I learned:

viral posts are great for short-term attention, but not for building a lasting audience.

ESPECIALLY when you can’t direct the attention to a newsletter or private group.

Here’s what I missed:

  • Short-Lived Engagement: Viral posts attract tons of eyes quickly, but most of that attention doesn’t last. Followers gained this way are usually more passive and they’re not as interested in sticking around long-term.

  • Lack of True Connections: Viral posts can be flashy, but they don’t build trust or genuine relationships. When people follow based on viral content alone, they’re less likely to engage with the everyday posts that don’t go viral.

  • Missed Opportunities to Deliver Value: By focusing on “going viral,” I neglected creating consistently valuable content. Regular, valuable posts may not blow up as often, but they’re what build a loyal, engaged audience over time.

Shifting from a “viral-seeking” strategy to a “value-first” strategy has changed everything.

Now, my goal is to:

  • Create posts that help people and keep them coming back, whether they go viral or not.

  • Engage directly with my audience—building connections that last beyond a single post.

  • Prioritize quality and consistency over chasing quick hits of popularity.

The ILLEGAL

I said I was going to explain myself, so here it is:

Apart from it being a really scumbag move and I would never do it today.

This taught me about which type of content would perform or not.

I didn’t just copy any post.

There was a fine selection I would make before copying something.

I didn’t want to copy something that I didn’t think would go viral.

This made me learn what posts would go viral on a consistent basis

By seeing which formats, hooks, and styles worked best, I began to understand the importance of clear, engaging structure.

Each element, from the hook to the call-to-action, needed to be sharp.

I also noticed that the look of a post - the formatting, readability, and layout - mattered just as much as the message.

Presentation plays a huge role in whether someone stops to read or scrolls on.

Certain themes, topics, and tones work consistently well, and copying content allowed me to quickly identify them.

I got a firsthand view of what “virality” meant in my niche.

I learned the importance of content structure, hooks, the look of the post and so much more.

This layed the ground for my knowledge today, about Threads growth.

I hope you can forgive me for copying content ;)

Pheew! That’s it for today! If you managed to read the whole thing, THANKS!

See you next sunday:)

Hmm, I wonder what I should write about?
